  • This is our first group project.  The goal is to gather listings about a large number of related projects, and to map those relationships within the WagN wiki.  This will give us a database to play with.  Full plan below:

    Introduction

The larger mission for those working on the OpenKollaboration project is to catalyze strategic confluence amongst related projects. What this means is that we want to provide a community, the right processes and the right platform to make it as easy as possible for projects that have related goals and missions to find each other, explore areas of synergy, and connect with each other.

In parallel with the development of the OpenKollaboration Platform, we are also interested in:

    1. Mapping the project landscape
    2. Identifying and stimulating potential collaboration opportunities that flow from the formation of the Project Landscape Map.

Phase I: Mapping the Project Landscape: casting a wide net

    Objective:

We are interested in developing a large map of several hundred projects that might have synergies, and therefore might give rise to collaboration opportunities. This map will be developed manually by simply talking to project leaders. This aspect of the process is designed to get a top-down, ‘ten thousand foot’ view of the landscape.

    Process:

    1. Develop Project Mapping Questions related directly to OK Platform project taxonomy (needs, resources, members, goals)
    2. Develop Project Mapping Team: initially the OK Phase I Team (Suresh, Stephan, Matt, Gerry, Michael, Tav)
    3. Develop Stage I Project List: list of projects that are known to OK Phase I Team
    4. Distribute questions and collect data from Stage I Projects
    5. Form Stage II Project List: list of projects received from feedback from Stage I
      1. Note that if the stage I list has 25 projects, and each of the projects provides 3 related projects, the stage II list will have 75 projects.
    6. Contact Stage II Project List and gather data
    7. This process can be iterated until we have a suitably large database.

There's also an alternative experiment in data gathering, which is being discussed here: http://groups.google.com/group/openkollab/browse_thread/thread/ac887d765eaa04a2   Information collected: INTERVIEW The following is the first iteration of a questionnaire being developed by the OpenKollaboration project. We are developing a community, processes ...

    ...

Phase II: Developing the Project Landscape Map

    Objective:

After completion of stages I and II in this process, we expect to have a workably large database – hopefully at least 100 projects. We will use this information and the related information provided by project participants to do further mapping. This will be a somewhat subjective process, and it is difficult to see how it will unfold at this stage.

    Process:

    1. Members of the OK Project Mapping team develop independent mapping
    2. Members of the OK Project Mapping team discuss similarities in differences in their independent mappings
    3. Members of the OK Project Mapping team collaborate on the formation of a Project Landscape map that we are all in general agreement with.

Phase III: Identifying Collaboration Opportunities and Driving Collaboration (digging deeper)

    Objective:

After we have completed an initial Project Landscape Map we want to utilize this information to test the general viability and effectiveness of the model by using this information to bring together groups and to explore potential collaboration opportunities.

    Process:

    1. We will utilize the information that we have gathered during phase I during the development of the Project Landscape Map in order to identify potential relationships where there might be synergy.
    2. We approach the organizations with a description of the processes thus described as well as a rationale for exploring collaboration opportunities that we envision.
