This roadmap is meant to situate our project objectives in a timeline, to give an easy view of where we're headed. Development is happening on all of the phases simultaneously, but with an emphasis on earlier phases.
Phase I: Project Mapping - Opens 7/29
This is a data gathering and outreach phase. With our vision clearly documented, we can start to invite more collaborators onto this project. We'll do this by gathering examples of related projects and documenting them as structured data within the wiki. The full plan for this Phase is documented here:
Phase II: Micro-Services - ??? to ???
In this phase we will begin to offer a suite of related "micro-services" to our community. These services will function together with the WagN wiki and the IRC freenode chat service. The services are (note: links are not live):
itson.at: an event scheduling service which makes allowances for virtual meetings taking place across time zones, and for unconferences and other open space events.
planfil.es: simple task tracking service
shaila.it: a means for capturing and annotating the activity stream from your event, whether in IRC, Twitter, Flickr, or similar services
These services combined provide a lightweight collaboration platform for events and meetings related to the projects in our list. They will be developed and delivered by Tav and his team. The code will be closed.
Phase III: Organizational Development - ??? to ???
In order to get to Phase IV, we'll need some way of rewarding collaborators for their efforts. We're evaluating a number of options at the moment. Some of what's in play:
- Alternative currency and gift economies
- A freemium model (Phase IV)
- Outside investors
- Crowdfunding and dontations
(Need to fill this out once we are all on the same page more)
Phase IV: Espra and Plexnet - ??? to The Future!
The Plexnet is a parallel set of web standards that will make web services more flexible and will support the next generation of collaboration web apps. It will be an open and decentralized standard.
Espra is a set of web applications built on top of the Plexnet by Tav and his team. The aim in the short term is to meet the needs of the OpenKollab community, but functionality will continuously expand to realize their larger vision of "Web 4.0".
A detailed explanation of the current plan, including notes on revenue model, can be found at http://www.espians.com/iteration-x.html#revenue-streams.
The exact nature of the agreement between OpenKollab and Espra will be worked out in Phase III
